Now that we know what the formulas are, let’s look at a few example problems using them. For example, if you are starting with mm and you know r and h in mm, your calculations will result with V in mm 3 and S in mm 2.īelow are the standard formulas for surface area. The formula for the surface area of a prism is SA 2B + ph S A 2 B + p h, where B, again, stands for the area of the base, p represents the perimeter of the base, and h stands for the height of the prism. The units are in place to give an indication of the order of the results such as ft, ft 2 or ft 3. Units: Note that units are shown for convenience but do not affect the calculations. They look at mortality, hospitalizations, improvement of quality of life, improvement of heart function.” “Then usually you have a six-month or year follow-up. “They have auditors who come in and audit to make sure everything has been done according to strict trial guidelines,” he said. Such trials are strictly governed by the FDA. It is to get the implanting technique down.” There’s a learning curve and they want us to see and have faith in the product. “It’s a very new device, there’s nothing we’ve done that’s close with this. “The first few patients in the trial, they allowed us to … get our feet wet,” Ozs said. In such trials, patients don’t typically know which camp they’re in, but Stoll knew from the start. Some patients received the WiSE CRT device, others a type of defibrillator. Vincent’s is the only site in Florida and one of only two in the Southeast. Stoll is one of about 350 patients nationwide taking part in the clinical trials: Ascension St. Food and Drug Administration, which allows fast-track development. But because it could be lifesaving for tens of thousands of patients, it was designated in 2019 as a “breakthrough device” by the U.S. In the United States, the WiSE CRT System is currently “an investigational device and not available for sale,” according to Ascension. The results for Stoll and other trial patients who received the device are “nothing short of miraculous,” Oza said. The goal was improving the “heart’s pumping ability by synchronizing the left and right ventricles to distribute blood to the lungs and body more effectively,” according to the manufacturer, EBR Systems Inc. The WiSE CRT System stimulates the heart’s left ventricle, “since internal stimulation of the left ventricle is thought to be a potentially superior, more anatomically correct pacing location,” according to Ascension. “For many patients they’re not candidates because they’re too old or too frail, so they really had no other options.” “For the 20 to 30 percent who don’t respond at all or get worse, we really had zero options for them outside of heart transplant or mechanical heart,” said Oza, the Jacksonville hospital’s chief cardiologist. It was developed for cardiac patients who do not respond to traditional treatments, just like Stoll. The new device being tested was the WiSE CRT System, the world’s first wireless pacemaker designed to be implanted inside the heart. Then Stoll’s cardiologist of five years, Saumil Oza, recommended he join a clinical trial Oza was to lead at Ascension St. He was left to ponder the end of his life. “I became very ill with congestive heart failure.” “When I had my pacemaker installed, I had a heart function of 52 and it was great and then all of a sudden my heart bottomed out,” he said. But it was not a realistic option because of his age and deteriorating condition. “It’s made a difference in my heart health that’s night and day,” he said.Īfter other failed treatments for heart failure, including implantation of a traditional pacemaker three years ago, Stoll’s only option was a transplant. “Without this device, you probably wouldn’t be talking to me. He was the first patient in Florida to receive the device, as part of an ongoing clinical trial at Ascension St. Prior to a medical procedure four months ago, he could hardly summon the strength to get out of bed.Ī groundbreaking new wireless pacemaker the size of a large grain of rice now resides inside his heart, the small battery and transmitter that powers it implanted under his armpit. These days 72-year-old Ken Stoll spends most of his time restoring cars in his Fernandina Beach shop, and, with wife Jennifer, traveling the country in a tour-bus size motor home. For example, the risk of employee injury, which has a low likelihood but high impact, would be considered a high-priority risk. Red condition These high-risk scores are high in impact and probability.Īmber condition (aka yellow condition) These risks are somewhat high in impact and probability. There are three common categories based on risk score: Based on the risk score, the performing organization can place the risk in differing categories to guide risk reaction. The scores within the probability-impact matrix can be referenced against the performing organization’s policies for risk reaction. Ordinal scales Identify and rank the risks with common terms, such as very high to very unlikely, or using a RAG (red, amber, green) rating to signify the risk score.Cardinal scales Identify the probability and impact on a numeric value from 0.01 (very low) to 1.00 (certain). The probability of occurrence for each individual project risk is assessed as well as its impact on one or more project objectives if it does occur, using definitions of probability and impact for the project as specified in the risk management plan. This matrix specifies combinations of probability and impact that allow individual project risks to be divided into priority groups. It uses a numerical scale to rate the likelihood and impact of each risk, which can then be used to prioritize risks and develop strategies to mitigate or manage them. A probability and impact matrix is a tool used in qualitative risk analysis to evaluate the likelihood and impact of identified risks. The drivers did what they could to put on a show for the fans. There were a lot more dragsters this time, unfortunately there was also a lot of rain. In 1965 another Dragfest was held and I went with Bill Haynes. I guess if someone built a car like that over here at the time it would probably have just been called a special? These were old looking cars with large supercharged V8s, they looked so ungainly (and handled accordingly sometimes). My favourites however were the Willys coupes driven by Keith Pittman and George Montgomery. The drivers were Ronnie Sox and Dave Strickler. Factory experimentals they were called, big American saloons but with a lot more power and noise. The dragsters of Don Garlits, Tommy Ivo and Tony Nancy just blew us away! Just as exciting were the cars that looked sort of normal. In 1964 the first Dragfest at Blackbushe airfield was being advertised so, with the memories of that magazine still in my head, I went with a couple of mates to see what was to change my life for quite a few years. One of my fellow pupils bought a copy of Hot Rod magazine and he was showing us all these pictures of weird looking vehicles (dragsters and hot rods) and their big engines and wide rear tyres. It all started in 1963 during my last year at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford. Keith has supplied slides for two extensive galleries of Santa Pod 1967-71, also Canada 1968-9 and U.S. When he got an opportunity in 1973 to drive the ex-Tony Anderson 'Trouble' dragster, he grabbed it with both hands and continued to drive the car, renamed 'Whiskey Peddler', with help from John Smith, until the Easter 1976 Santa Pod 10th Anniversary meeting.Į thanks Keith for providing his story and John Hunt and Nick Pettitt for help with editing and proof reading the feature and making archive images available. and Canada in the late 60s and early 70s. Keith became a fan by reading about the sport, going to the first Blackbushe Dragfest in 1964 as a 17 year old, and attending events as a spectator in the U.S. Surrey Drag Racing Pioneers - Keith Stacey Tom’s panicked cries (“Tell me what to do!”) as his wife clutches her belly in pain for the second time - a nightmare repeating itself - make for a moment of authentic rawness in a film of sentiments that often seem more mimed than deeply felt.īut quicker than you can say “deus ex machina,” a dinghy drifts toward the beach with a dead man and a howling newborn inside it. The couple tries to have a child, but Isabel miscarries twice. It’s all enough to make Terrence Malick blush. Cue montage of sun-dappled embraces, wind-tousled hair and sweet nothings whispered, set to Alexandre Desplat’s unremarkably lovely score. They marry and she moves into his isolated seaside cottage, which is as quaint and inviting as something out of a Better Homes and Gardens spread. John Keats he’s not, but Isabel adores him. The subsequent courtship yields some eye-rolly exchanges, as when Isabel asks Tom what he wishes for in the future and he responds, simply, “Life.” The epistolary phase of their romance is equally dewy, with the two exchanging letters heard via voiceover: “You have a light inside you,” Tom writes to his beloved. One wonders why the indie-bred Cianfrance ( Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) pursued something so square as his first major studio project - or, rather, why he leaned so far into the squareness. Stedman, The Light Between Oceans is a fundamentally silly piece of work - think Nicholas Sparks in period drag - trying to pass as self-respecting. But Cianfrance, while a skilled visual craftsman, is not the sublime stylist Sirk was, nor does he have that filmmaker’s willingness to lean into the excesses of his material. Great melodramas can accommodate preposterous plots Sirk’s Magnificent Obsession is a prime example. With a tone that’s somber bordering on portentous, it turns on three thinly drawn central figures whose fable-like story is driven by the kind of coincidences and contrivances that, aside from being easier to buy on the page than onscreen, make their sorrow feel arbitrary and weightless. Even judged by less exacting standards, The Light Between Oceans is an underwhelming experience. All photos & video are mine and cannot be used without permission. The performance was described as the best moment of the night by music writers. On November 4, 2015, Stapleton performed it at the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards as a duet with Justin Timberlake. His cover was never officially released to radio as a single, but it was released as a promotional CD single. The song's melody is an almost note-for-note rendition of Etta James' song " I'd Rather Go Blind." His producer Dave Cobb heard the song and suggested that he should record the song for his album. Stapleton and the band enjoyed playing the song, and he decided to sing the song every show. Stapleton first sang his version on the spur of the moment while the band were playing during a soundcheck before a show in Charlottesville, Virginia. Īmerican singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton recorded an R&B-influenced cover of the song for his debut studio album Traveller released in 2015. Music publications praised Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake's performance. In 1985, he performed the song at the inaugural Farm Aid, and Coe joined Jones onstage to sing a chorus.Ĭhris Stapleton version "Tennessee Whiskey" The song remained a mainstay in Jones' live set, with the singer often substituting the name of whatever city or town he was in for "Tennessee" in the second chorus. Jones' version reached a new peak commercially, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in November 1983 and number one on the RPM Country Tracks chart in Canada. The song was later covered by fellow American country music artist George Jones, whose version was released in August 1983 as the third single from his album Shine On. Commercially, it peaked at number 77 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. His version is recorded in more of a traditional country style. It was first recorded by American country music artist David Allan Coe for his album of the same name Tennessee Whiskey released in 1981. Īfter completion, the song was first offered to George Strait but he turned it down. He had an idea for it for some time and they went back to Hargrove's house to write the song at four o'clock in the morning. The pair decided to write a song together after meeting each other at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. "Tennessee Whiskey" was written in 1981 by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove. Stapleton's version of the song has been certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).Ĭomposition and David Allan Coe's recording "Tennessee Whiskey" The song has been covered by several artists, including Chris Stapleton, whose breakout performance of the song at the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards with Justin Timberlake propelled the song to a greater level of popularity.
